One person has died, and twelve people are currently trapped in a former gold mine in Colorado. The incident occurred after an elevator malfunctioned at the tourist site, according to authorities.
The elevator at the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, located near Cripple Creek, experienced a mechanical issue while descending about 500 feet (152 meters) beneath the surface. This malfunction created a “severe danger for the participants,” resulting in the tragic death of one individual, as confirmed by Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell during a press conference.
Despite the challenging circumstances, the twelve individuals remaining at the bottom of the mine, approximately 1,000 feet (305 meters) underground, are reportedly in safe conditions and have been in communication with rescue teams. Efforts are underway to restore functionality to the elevator in order to bring the trapped individuals to safety.
Sheriff Mikesell stated that if necessary, the group could be rescued by rope, although the primary focus remains on getting the elevator system operational again. The victim’s identity and cause of death have not been disclosed at this time.
The last recorded incident at the mine dates back to 1986. Governor Jared Polis has pledged state resources to support the rescue operation, emphasising the importance of ensuring a prompt and secure resolution to the situation.
The historic Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine, which first opened in the 1800s and ceased operations in the 1960s, continues to offer tours to visitors. The mine’s website advertises a one-hour tour that involves descending 100 stories into the earth to witness gold veins in the rock and experience an underground tram ride.
Situated in Cripple Creek, a small town southwest of Colorado Springs with a population of approximately 1,100 residents, the mine remains a significant attraction in the area. Rescuers are diligently working towards safely evacuating the trapped individuals and managing the aftermath of this tragic incident.
