$20,000 Reward Offered Following Fatal Shooting of Sea Lion on California Beach
Federal authorities have announced a $20,000 reward for any information related to the fatal shooting of a sea lion in Southern California. The tragic discovery was made on August 7th between two lifeguard stations at Bolsa Chica State Beach in Orange County. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that the wounded male sea lion, estimated to be around 2 years old, succumbed to its injuries the following day. A subsequent examination confirmed that the sea lion had sustained a gunshot wound to its back.
In a statement released on Wednesday, NOAA Fisheries disclosed that its law enforcement division is offering the reward “for information leading to a civil penalty or criminal conviction” in connection with the shooting incident. Under the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act, it is illegal to harass, hunt, capture, or harm sea lions and other marine mammals. Offenders can face severe consequences including criminal charges, fines, and potential confiscation of any vessels involved in the unlawful act.
