A drop-in event in Blantyre is set to offer advice on eligibility for pension credit and winter fuel payments. Scheduled for Wednesday, October 16, the information session will take place at Blantyre Old Parish church hall on Craigmuir Road. This event coincides with the weekly meeting of the Warm Welcome group, offering residents valuable insights into financial support options impacted by means testing for the winter fuel payment.
Local MSP Clare Haughey is spearheading the event in collaboration with Hamilton Citizens’ Advice Bureau. The previous universal winter fuel payment of £200-300 for all households with a resident of state pension age has now transitioned to eligibility based on receiving pension credit or other top-up benefits. In the previous year, more than 60,000 South Lanarkshire residents received winter fuel payments, with only 8444 being recipients of pension credit.
Haughey expresses concern that eligible individuals might miss out due to not applying, while others who are no longer entitled may face financial challenges. She emphasises the importance of raising awareness about unclaimed pension credit and encourages those who may qualify to attend the event for more information. Haughey underlines her commitment to assisting as many people as possible in receiving support with their bills and connecting them to further sources of help.
The drop-in advice session will run from 1pm to 3pm on October 16, with no appointment necessary. Concurrently, Blantyre Old Parish Church’s Warm Welcome session will offer hot food and camaraderie from 12 noon to 2pm every Wednesday. The aim is to ensure maximum outreach to those affected by the recent changes in eligibility criteria for winter fuel payments.
