Colorado man loses both legs in wood chipper accident 15 minutes into his first day at his new job

A Colorado man faced a tragic incident during his first day at a new job, resulting in the loss of both his legs. John O’Neill, 33, was operating a wood chipper in Longmont when a branch resembling a fish hook became entangled with his court-ordered ankle monitor, dragging him into the machine. The sharp blades inflicted severe injuries to his toes, foot, ankle, and legs within just 15 minutes of starting his shift on September 24.

Despite the excruciating pain, O’Neill displayed immense courage as he fought to survive by gripping the wood chipper’s edge, while his colleagues, wearing protective ear gear, initially failed to hear his cries for help. Eventually, his coworkers managed to extricate him from the machine, but the damage had already been done, with the blades reaching his mid-thigh area before emergency services arrived at the scene.

Following the harrowing ordeal, O’Neill was rushed to a local hospital and later transferred to St. Anthony Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado, where he underwent a life-saving procedure after technically dying en route. Subsequently, his legs were amputated above the knee, culminating in a moment of realization for O’Neill as he awoke in the hospital bed the next day.

In the wake of the tragic accident, O’Neill’s family rallied around him, with his mother enduring such distress upon learning of the incident that she required hospitalization for three days. Despite the immense challenges he now faces, O’Neill has expressed his determination to focus on recovery, including plans to receive prosthetics and dedicate himself to volunteering efforts. He aspires to utilise his platform to advocate for causes close to his heart, notably promoting sobriety from substance abuse.

A crowdfunding campaign has been initiated to support O’Neill in achieving his aspirations, with donations exceeding $27,000 towards a $30,000 target. As he embarks on this new chapter, O’Neill’s resilience and resolve serve as a testament to the strength of the human spirit in overcoming adversity and forging a path towards healing and advocacy.
