A disruptive incident involving a drunk Scottish passenger grounded a TUI flight from Glasgow bound for Antalya, Turkey, on Friday, May 24. James Rae caused chaos on the flight by spilling alcohol on a child and using inappropriate language towards the airline staff. Rae, who appeared to be intoxicated, began drinking duty-free spirits onboard and became aggressive towards the crew when asked to stop swearing, especially considering the presence of children on the flight. The cabin manager confronted him about his unacceptable behaviour, but Rae continued to act belligerently, leading to the flight being diverted to Newcastle International Airport.
During the diversion, Rae’s disruptive behaviour escalated as he reportedly banged his head against the seat in front of him, resulting in alcohol spilling over a young girl. Following the landing in Newcastle, he was arrested, causing significant delays for both the grounded Glasgow flight and the return flight from Antalya, which was delayed for over 17 hours. The captain of the flight expressed frustration, calling the situation a “massive inconvenience” for the airline.
Rae, a 29-year-old from Falkirk with no prior criminal record, pleaded guilty to charges of entering an aircraft while intoxicated. Despite his lawyer emphasising his good character, the magistrates transferred the case to Newcastle Crown Court due to the severity of the incident. The court proceedings are scheduled for November 6. The disruptive behaviour of the passenger not only disrupted air travel but also posed a safety risk to other passengers and crew members. Such incidents highlight the consequences of irresponsible behaviour while travelling by air.
