Former Newcastle United striker Nile Ranger has opened up about his regrets regarding his football career, acknowledging that his behaviour led him down the wrong path. Ranger, who was once considered a promising talent, expressed remorse for not fulfilling his potential, admitting that he was “wild and messed up.”
The 33-year-old striker reflected on his tumultuous journey in football, which saw him make his senior debut at Newcastle at just 17 years old. Despite signing a lucrative contract with the club as a teenager, Ranger’s off-field issues ultimately derailed his career, leading to his departure from the club in 2013.
Ranger’s troubles off the pitch continued to haunt him, culminating in a prison sentence for fraud in 2017. His journey also included a stint at a Young Offenders Institute for a robbery he committed at the age of 15. Currently playing for Kettering Town in the seventh tier of English football, Ranger admitted that he should have made better choices to reach the pinnacle of his footballing career.
In an interview with BBC Sport, Ranger revealed the warnings he received from teammates, friends, and managers about his behaviour affecting his career prospects. He confessed, “Teammates, friends and managers would say: ‘Nile, your chances are going to run out.’ I wouldn’t listen. I was wild, wild, wild.”
Reflecting on his past actions, Ranger acknowledged that his unruly behaviour cost him a successful career in football. Despite achieving a degree of success and financial stability, he acknowledged that his actions ultimately led to his downfall. Following his time at Newcastle, Ranger had spells at Swindon, Blackpool, and Southend, highlighting the missed opportunities due to his behaviour.
Ranger’s journey in football also included representing England at the Uefa European Under-19 Championship in 2009, showcasing his potential on the international stage.
