Gareth Southgate Reveals Timeline for Return to Management
Gareth Southgate, the former England football manager, has disclosed that he will not be making a swift return to coaching following his departure from the national team. Southgate, who stepped down after Euro 2024, indicated that he intends to take his time in order to make considered decisions about his next career move.
After an impressive eight-year tenure with England that included reaching the finals of the last two European Championships, Southgate has been linked to various managerial positions, with Manchester United being a notable contender. However, Southgate has made it clear that he will not be seeking any coaching roles within the next year.
During the European Club Association (ECA) general assembly, Southgate stated, “I need to give myself time to make good decisions. When you come out of a really big role you need to give your body time, you need to give your mind time.”
Southgate’s managerial experience in club football was at Middlesbrough, where his time ended in 2009 following relegation from the Premier League. He later transitioned to coaching England’s Under-21 team before eventually taking over the senior squad from Sam Allardyce.
Reflecting on his potential return to club football, Southgate expressed, “It is unlikely to be another national federation. England was from the heart.” He emphasised the importance of passion and excitement in his work, hinting that any future role must align with these values.
Despite speculation surrounding Southgate’s future, including rumours about a move to Manchester United, the renowned coach remains steadfast in his decision to take a step back and carefully consider his next career move.
