‘Groundbreaking’ flights six-times faster than speed of sound one step closer as new engine unveiled

Venus Aerospace has unveiled a groundbreaking hypersonic engine designed for high-speed flights, with the first test set for next year. The Texas-based aerospace company aims to revolutionize hypersonic travel with their advanced propulsion engine, which can power high-speed vehicles like drones and aircraft.

While hypersonic technology has been utilized in military and space sectors, commercial hypersonic flights have yet to become a reality. Venus Aerospace’s new engine, the Venus Detonation Ramjet 2,000lb Thrust Engine (VDR2), is poised to change that. The company envisions vehicles travelling long distances at high altitudes, reaching speeds faster than the speed of sound, with the potential for a London to New York flight in under an hour.

The VDR2 engine is designed to achieve speeds up to Mach 6, equivalent to six times the speed of sound or 3,600mph. It is projected to sustain efficient cruising at Mach 4 for journeys spanning up to 5,000 miles. Moreover, the engine is engineered for takeoff and landing at various airports, offering a 30-minute turnaround time.

During the Up.Summit in Arkansas, Venus Aerospace showcased this groundbreaking engine, receiving accolades from industry leaders and investors. Andrew Duggleby, the company’s co-founder, expressed enthusiasm about the engine, stating that it paves the way for the hypersonic economy to become a reality.

Venus Aerospace has partnered with Velontra to further advance high-speed flight technologies. Both companies are optimistic about the potential of combining their expertise to propel commercial and defence hypersonic flights. The collaborative effort aims to unlock the high-speed flight economy and bring hypersonic travel closer to reality.

With plans to conduct a test flight using a drone in 2025, Venus Aerospace anticipates the production of its first hypersonic commercial aircraft, the Venus Stargazer M400, in the 2030s. While the prospect of drastically reducing travel time between major cities is enticing, the timeline for a fully operational hypersonic commercial plane remains uncertain.

Simon Calder, travel correspondent at The Independent, cautioned that the environmental and financial challenges associated with flying faster than the speed of sound make the reality of London to New York in an hour unlikely in the near future. He suggested that the vision of hypersonic travel may take a few more decades to materialize.

As Venus Aerospace prepares to test its revolutionary engine and pave the way for high-speed flight, the aviation industry and travellers alike await the potential transformation of air travel with bated breath.
