Homebuyers used to avoid construction. Now, there’s a worse neighbor: influencers

In a time when rising costs and high demand are already challenging apartment hunters and homebuyers, a new concern has emerged for those looking to buy property in certain neighbourhoods across major cities: the increasing presence of influencers. Areas that were once highly sought after, such as Williamsburg in Brooklyn and West Hollywood in Los Angeles, are now losing their appeal due to the overwhelming number of influencers residing there.

According to a recent report by Curbed, neighbourhoods like Williamsburg, Dumbo, and the West Village in New York City have become flooded with influencers taking photos and shooting videos. For renters who value privacy, this trend has become a significant drawback in their search for an apartment.

Corcoran broker Sydney Blumstein shared an anecdote about a client who refused an apartment next to the Manhattan Bridge in Dumbo because of the large crowds of influencers and tourists in the area. The client loved the apartment but found the daily chaos outside overwhelming.

The influx of influencers not only affects the residents but also impacts small businesses as popular locations are overrun with followers seeking the same experiences showcased on social media. While this may benefit business owners, the increased foot traffic can quickly transform once-charming spaces into unpleasant and crowded environments.

Reddit users from New York and Los Angeles have also weighed in on the influencer invasion in their cities. A Reddit user on r/NYCinfluencersnark expressed frustration about seeing already expensive neighbourhoods like the West Village and Soho become even more inaccessible due to the surge in influencer residents.

Another Reddit user highlighted the significant influencer migration to New York City despite the high cost of living, while a Los Angeles resident warned others about areas like West Hollywood, Hollywood, and Downtown that are popular among influencers.

As influencers continue to flock to major cities, residents and potential homebuyers are faced with the challenge of navigating once-desirable neighbourhoods now crowded with content creators. The increasing presence of influencers is reshaping the landscape of urban living and raising concerns among those seeking a more peaceful and authentic community.
