Nepalese Teenager Achieves Remarkable Feat by Conquering All 14 of Earth’s Highest Peaks
In a remarkable display of courage and determination, an 18-year-old Sherpa from Nepal has set a new world record by becoming the youngest person ever to summit all 14 of Earth’s highest peaks. Nima Rinji Sherpa achieved this incredible milestone by reaching the summit of Tibet’s Mount Shishapangma, as confirmed by Nepalese mountaineering company Seven Summit Treks.
Expressing his desire to challenge the global perception of Nepal’s Sherpa community, Mr. Sherpa dedicated his world record-breaking achievement to his initiative, #SherpaPower. In an Instagram post, he highlighted the significance of his accomplishment beyond personal success, shedding light on the strength, resilience and passion of Sherpas in the mountaineering world.
Traditionally known for their invaluable support in the Himalayan climbing industry, Nepali climbers, particularly ethnic Sherpas from the Everest region, are now receiving well-deserved recognition for their own achievements. Through his project #SherpaPower, Mr. Sherpa aims to inspire the younger generation of Sherpas to break free from stereotypes and embrace their potential as elite athletes, adventurers, and pioneers.
Having embarked on his climbing journey at the age of 16, Nima Rinji Sherpa had previously set records by conquering the peaks of Everest and Lhotse within an astonishing 10-hour timeframe. Accompanied by his climbing partner Pasang Nurbu Sherpa on his latest expedition, Mr. Sherpa’s monumental journey began in 2022 with the ascent of Mount Manaslu, ultimately culminating in the successful conquering of all 14 “eight-thousanders” in just over two years.
Climbing all 14 peaks above 8000m is considered the epitome of mountaineering ambition, as these climbers navigate treacherous “death zones” characterized by dangerously low oxygen levels. Encouraging unity and collaboration, Mr. Sherpa emphasized the collective significance of achievements over individual triumphs and called for love, respect, and harmony among people worldwide.
Proud of his son’s extraordinary accomplishment, Tashi Sherpa expressed confidence in Nima’s abilities, attributing his success to rigorous training and unwavering determination. Nima Nuru Sherpa, president of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, hailed the record-breaking feat as a testimony to defying stereotypes and showcasing the limitless possibilities achievable with strong determination.
Rakesh Gurung, head of the Nepalese tourism department’s mountaineering division, officially confirmed Mr. Sherpa’s record-breaking achievement, applauding his indomitable spirit and remarkable success. This historic feat surpasses the previous record set by Mingma Gyabu Sherpa in 2019 and cements Nima Rinji Sherpa’s legacy as a trailblazer in the world of mountaineering.
