New species of Galapagos finch ‘can arise after just six consecutive droughts’

A new study suggests that a new species of finch could emerge in the Galapagos Islands after just six consecutive droughts. Scientists have found that these iconic birds, known as Darwin’s finches, can experience significant changes in their beak size and song patterns due to extreme weather events.

The Galapagos Islands, a province of Ecuador, are famous for the diverse range of finches living there. Darwin’s finches played a crucial role in Charles Darwin’s discovery of evolution by natural selection. Researchers have observed that prolonged droughts can lead to alterations in finch beak sizes, affecting their ability to sing and potentially hindering their mating behaviours.

Published in the journal Science, the study indicates that physical transformations in birds triggered by environmental challenges could pave the way for the evolution of a new finch species. Jeffrey Podos, a biology professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and the senior author of the paper, highlighted the potential impact of these changes on the mating behaviour of the finches.

The research builds on previous studies, including the groundbreaking work by British biologists Rosemary and Peter Grant, who witnessed the evolution of a new finch species in just two generations on Daphne Major, a small island in the Galapagos. The findings shed light on how climate variability and resource availability can drive speciation in these birds.

By digitally modelling the mating songs of finches with different beak sizes resulting from drought events, the researchers demonstrated that changes in song patterns could disrupt communication between different generations of finches. Katie Schroeder, a co-author of the study, explained how simulated songs altered by multiple droughts elicited minimal responses from the birds, indicating a potential barrier to interbreeding.

The study suggests that after six major drought events, the beak and song modifications in the finches could lead to the emergence of a novel species. These findings provide valuable insights into the evolutionary processes shaping the iconic Darwin’s finches in response to environmental challenges.
