The eight best ways to get rid of spiders from your home

Eight Effective Methods to Eliminate Spiders From Your Home

With the arrival of spider mating season from early September through November, it’s not uncommon to find these arachnids lurking within your home. While the thought of spiders may send shivers down your spine, experts suggest they actually serve a beneficial purpose by naturally controlling other pests like flies and insects.

Paul Blackhurst, the head of the technical academy at Rentokil Pest Control, emphasises that out of around 650 spider species in the UK, only a few, such as the lesser house spider and the giant house spider, are typically seen indoors. Additionally, false widow spiders, although increasingly spotted in the UK, tend to stay hidden in cracks during the day and require dry, warm environments.

Spiders are commonly found in areas with a water source, making bathrooms and kitchens prime locations for these creatures. As temperatures drop, spiders seek refuge indoors, which could mean some have been cohabiting with you since the previous autumn. While spiders may offer pest control benefits, most people prefer to keep their homes spider-free.

To combat spiders in your living space, here are eight effective strategies:

1. Vacuum regularly – Remove spider webs and vacuum hidden spots such as under furniture and in corners.
2. Seal cracks and openings – Prevent entry by sealing gaps in walls, pipes, windows, and doors.
3. Reduce outdoor lighting – Minimise outdoor lights that attract insect prey for spiders.
4. Use natural spider-repellent – Create a repellent using essential oils like tea tree or peppermint.
5. Employ spider-repelling scents – Utilise air fresheners or candles with citronella to deter spiders.
6. Rub lemon peel on windowsills – Repel spiders by rubbing lemon peels on windowsills and other spider-prone areas.
7. Include spider-repelling plants – Mint, lemongrass, and eucalyptus plants can deter spiders with their aromas.
8. Limit spider food sources – Keep firewood and compost heaps away from the house to reduce insect attraction.

By implementing these practices, you can effectively manage and prevent spiders from taking up residence in your home. Remember, while spiders may be beneficial in controlling pests, maintaining a spider-free environment is preferable for many homeowners.
