Awash in oil money, Guyana promises cash, free tuition and other perks ahead of election

Guyana Prepares to Offer Cash, Free Tuition, and More Benefits Ahead of Elections

Guyana, a country flourishing in oil wealth, is gearing up for its upcoming general elections with a series of enticing promises from President Irfaan Ali. Among the perks announced are free college tuition and a significant one-time cash payment of nearly $1,000 to every household in this oil-rich South American nation.

In a special session at Parliament, President Ali also pledged to reduce power bills by 50% and raise the monthly minimum wage from $350 to $500 starting next year. These measures are part of the government’s efforts to provide support to the population through various public aid programs. Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo expressed confidence in the country’s economic capacity to fulfil these promises, citing Guyana’s $22 billion economy.

Once one of the poorest nations in South America, Guyana’s fortunes changed dramatically when ExxonMobil and partners discovered significant oil reserves off its Atlantic coast in 2015. Since commencing oil production in late 2019, the country has experienced a rapid influx of wealth, with daily output projected to reach 1.3 million barrels by 2027.

With a GDP growth of over 60% in 2022, the highest globally according to the International Monetary Fund, Guyana is implementing new measures to address the rising cost of living. The reinstatement of free tertiary education, which was discontinued in the 1990s, is highlighted as a key initiative by Vice President Jagdeo to alleviate financial burdens on citizens.

Capitalising on its newfound oil wealth, Guyana’s government has initiated numerous infrastructure projects, including the construction of hospitals, schools, highways, and a first deep-water port. Additionally, a $1.9 billion gas-to-energy project is underway to further reduce electricity costs for residents.

The commitment to providing financial relief and enhancing public services underscores Guyana’s transformation into a burgeoning oil economy. As the nation prepares for its upcoming elections, these promises signal a pivotal moment in shaping the country’s future trajectory and improving the livelihoods of its citizens.
