An expert dentist has issued a warning to Brits regarding the potential harm that certain popular autumnal drinks could cause to their teeth and oral health. With the arrival of autumn in the UK, along with cooler temperatures, comes the temptation of seasonal favourites such as pumpkin-spiced coffees and rich hot chocolates. However, Dr Zaeem Jafri from Ordo has raised concerns about the detrimental effects these beverages can have on teeth and mouths if consumed frequently during this time of year.
One such popular choice, the pumpkin spiced latte, can contain up to 50 grams of sugar, which is double the recommended daily allowance. Dr Zaeem highlights that high sugar levels can lead to the production of harmful acids that erode tooth enamel, ultimately increasing the risk of tooth decay. He advises against making a daily habit of indulging in these sugary drinks to maintain a healthy smile.
Mulled wine, another beloved seasonal beverage, also presents risks to oral health due to its high sugar content and hot temperature. Dr Zaeem explains that the alcohol in mulled wine reduces saliva production in the mouth, essential for washing away harmful bacteria that can stick to teeth. He suggests that if one does partake in mulled wine, it should be enjoyed occasionally, followed by drinking water to rinse the mouth.
When it comes to consuming hot drinks, Dr Zaeem emphasises the importance of allowing them to cool slightly before drinking. Consuming something overly hot in cold weather can lead to cracks in tooth enamel, resulting in increased sensitivity and potential pain if not managed appropriately. Additionally, he cautions against toffee-flavoured drinks, as the sticky texture of the sauce can linger on teeth, promoting the accumulation of bacteria that may contribute to tooth decay and gum issues.
For those tempted by autumn’s sweet treats, especially toffee-laden delights like toffee apples, Dr Zaeem recommends rinsing the mouth with water and flossing regularly to mitigate any potential damage. By being mindful of the impact these popular autumn drinks can have on oral health and taking preventative measures, individuals can enjoy the season’s treats while safeguarding their smiles.
