Detroit Mayor Criticises Trump for Disparaging Remarks about City
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan has fired back at former President Donald Trump after he made disparaging comments about the city during a speech at the Detroit Economic Club. Trump targeted Detroit while speaking about the potential impact of Vice President Kamala Harris being elected, painting a bleak picture of the city’s future under her leadership.
In his address, Trump warned that the country could end up like Detroit if Harris became president, claiming that the entire nation would face a similar fate. He also took aim at Detroit’s car industry, suggesting that it was on the verge of collapse but could be saved if he were re-elected.
The comments made by Trump did not sit well with Mayor Duggan, who took to social media to defend his city’s reputation. Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and State Senate Majority Whip Mallory McMorrow both criticised Trump for his disrespectful comments about Detroit. Governor Gretchen Whitmer called out Trump for his lack of understanding of the city’s resilience and urged him to refrain from speaking about Detroit in a negative light.
Local officials and residents rallied behind Duggan in defending Detroit’s reputation and highlighting its ongoing revitalisation efforts. Council President Mary Sheffield emphasised the city’s strength and progress, while journalist Jemele Hill urged Michigan Democrats to use Trump’s comments as motivation to showcase Detroit’s resilience and unity.
The backlash against Trump’s comments underscores the pride and determination of Detroiters to overcome challenges and continue on the path of growth and revitalisation.
