Greece Urged for Postponement of England Game After George Baldock’s Death
Midfielder Dimitrios Pelkas revealed that Greece had not wanted to play their Nations League match against England following the tragic passing of teammate George Baldock. Former Sheffield United defender, Baldock, aged 31, lost his life in a drowning accident in his Athens swimming pool. Representing Greece with pride, Baldock had earned 12 caps for the national team, having been eligible through his grandmother, and had last participated in the Euro 2024 play-off against Georgia.
Despite their reluctance to take the field, Greece honoured Baldock’s memory with a remarkable 2-1 victory over England at Wembley, marking their first win against the English side. The winning goal was scored by Evangelos Pavlidis in stoppage time, sealing the poignant triumph. Pelkas, who entered the game as a substitute, expressed that the team had not wished to play but had to proceed as there was no opportunity to reschedule the fixture due to the congested calendar.
Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, Pelkas stated, “When these things happen in life, football is the second part. The most important thing is that our friend George passed away. We will never forget him, I was sure today that he would be with us from upstairs and he would celebrate with us and force us to take this victory.” The team wore black armbands in remembrance of Baldock during the game at Wembley.
Describing the emotional toll of the events, Pelkas shared, “I don’t want to speak about football, yesterday was very hard for all of us, we couldn’t speak, we couldn’t laugh, we couldn’t eat in the hotel. It was a really hard day.” He extended his condolences to Baldock’s family, acknowledging the profound difficulty they must be facing during this period of loss. Expressing the bond shared with Baldock, Pelkas reflected, “It was really difficult, it was one of us, he was an excellent guy, it is like he was with us from a very young age.”
The football governing body, UEFA, has not yet provided a statement regarding the matter. Greece paid a poignant tribute to Baldock through their valiant performance on the pitch, demonstrating their unity and determination in the face of adversity. The memory of George Baldock will forever remain in the hearts of the Greek national team and their fans, as they continue to honour his legacy both on and off the field.
