Dominic Solanke thrilled with England comeback but disheartened by defeat
Dominic Solanke expressed his joy at making a return to the England national team after seven years but admitted his disappointment over the team’s defeat against Greece. Solanke, who made a brief 18-minute appearance off the bench, earned his second cap in the Nations League B2 clash at Wembley. However, despite his efforts, England succumbed to a shocking 2-1 loss in the match.
The striker’s previous appearance for England came in a friendly against Brazil back in 2017, and he reflected on his comeback by saying, “It was good, it would have been a lot better if we managed to get the win tonight, but it didn’t quite go to plan,” he said. “We didn’t play how we wanted to. I am over the moon to be out there, last time was a long time ago so a lot has happened since then but I was happy to be out there.”
Solanke appreciated the significance of representing his country once again, acknowledging the fierce competition for places in the national team. Despite the defeat, he remains optimistic about England’s capabilities, stating, “On our day we are good enough to beat anyone, we have got good players all over the pitch. Some games are difficult, we didn’t quite manage to get it right.”
Interim manager Lee Carsley’s decision to field a young attacking lineup failed to yield the desired outcome, as Greece secured a memorable victory with a late goal from Evangelos Pavlidis. The defeat came as a tribute to their teammate George Baldock, who tragically passed away ahead of the match.
Looking ahead, Solanke expressed confidence in England’s ability to bounce back in their upcoming match against Finland. He emphasised the importance of recovery and regrouping as a team, underscoring their determination to secure a positive result in the following game.
Despite the setback against Greece, Solanke’s return to international football marked a significant milestone in his career, and he remains focused on contributing to England’s success in the future matches. As the team prepares for their next challenge, Solanke’s determination and commitment will be crucial in their pursuit of victory on the international stage.
