A Dumfries and Galloway councillor has called for urgent action to address the rising issues of racism and anti-immigration slurs in the region. Councillor Linda Dorward expressed her concerns about the “appalling” hate-filled messages targeting immigrants who are being given shelter in Dumfries and Galloway. As a former governor of Dumfries Prison, Councillor Dorward emphasised the need for more proactive measures to combat racism and discrimination towards refugees resettling in the area.
During a council meeting, Councillor Dorward highlighted the disturbing sentiments circulating on social media and stressed the importance of collaborative efforts to tackle the growing racism and anti-immigration sentiments in the region. She specifically pointed out an instance where the council fell short in recognising and commemorating the contributions of the Windrush generation, a group of Caribbean migrants who played vital roles in post-war Britain.
Councillor Dorward urged for the council to take tangible steps, such as raising a flag annually to honour the Windrush generation, as a symbolic gesture towards combating racism and promoting inclusivity. She also noted the lack of acknowledgement from the council regarding Black History Month, emphasising the need to do more to recognise and celebrate diversity in the region.
The discussion at the council meeting was supported by Castle Douglas Councillor Pauline Drysdale, who highlighted the prevalence of online antisocial behaviour and the importance of addressing such issues. The council’s chief social work officer, Stephen Morgan, committed to reviewing and following up on actions related to the Windrush commemoration.
The call for action against racism and anti-immigration sentiments comes at a critical time when the need for inclusivity and diversity is paramount. Councillor Dorward’s advocacy for proactive measures to combat discrimination and promote unity reflects a broader push towards fostering a more welcoming and inclusive community in Dumfries and Galloway.
