Elon Musk Unveils the Cybercab, Tesla’s Self-Driving Robotaxi
Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently unveiled the company’s highly anticipated vision for driverless vehicles at a star-studded event held at the Warner Bros Studio in Los Angeles. The highlight of the event was the introduction of Tesla’s robotaxi, named the Cybercab, which is set to revolutionize autonomous transport.
Musk made a dramatic entrance late onto the stage in the Cybercab, a sleek vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals. The Cybercab, resembling a blend of Tesla’s Cybertruck and Model 3, is projected to hit the market by 2027 at a price point of less than $30,000 and an operational cost of just 20 cents per mile. Musk envisions the Cybercab transforming individual transportation into a mass transit-like experience due to its affordability.
The Cybercab will be accompanied by a larger robovan capable of accommodating up to 20 passengers without the need for a driver. While production is expected to commence before 2027, the deployment of these robotaxis will be subject to regulatory approval. Musk revealed plans for unsupervised rides to be permitted in California and Texas starting next year.
One standout feature of the Cybercab is its unconventional method of charging, which will involve induction charging instead of a traditional EV charging port. This innovative approach will also see the robotaxi undergoing thorough cleaning and sanitization at charging stations between rides.
Musk emphasized that the ultimate goal is to enable people to move around without the need to drive, thus offering new possibilities for passengers to utilise their time more productively while in transit. The interior of the 20-seat robovan, styled with an art deco theme, promises a luxurious experience with amenities like a bar and plush seating.
Furthermore, Tesla’s self-driving technology is expected to extend beyond the Cybercab to the entire Tesla vehicle lineup. Owners of Tesla models, including the Model 3, Model Y, Cybertruck, Model S, and Model X, may soon have the option to rent out their cars as autonomous taxis, presenting additional income-generating opportunities.
While the event captivated attendees with dancing robots and futuristic concepts, there was no mention of Tesla’s speculated upcoming model, the Model 2, which could potentially lower Tesla’s entry price to under £30,000. Currently, the most affordable Tesla available is the Model 3, starting at £39,990. Tesla enthusiasts eagerly anticipate further developments as the company continues to push the boundaries of innovation in the electric vehicle industry.
