When muscles are contracted during isometric exercises, they compress blood vessels, temporarily raising blood pressure. However, upon relaxation, a surge of blood flow occurs, widening blood vessels and reducing blood pressure over time.

The release of metabolites during isometric exercises triggers the sympathetic nervous system, initially increasing blood pressure. With repeated practice over weeks, the sympathetic nervous system activity decreases, resulting in lower blood pressure and reduced strain on the cardiovascular system. Studies comparing isometric exercises to high-intensity interval training have shown greater reductions in resting blood pressure with isometrics.

For optimal benefits, it is recommended to perform isometric contractions for two minutes at 30-50% of maximum effort several times a week.
