Investors eagerly await Whitbread’s trading update as the company navigates through a recent restructuring and challenging market conditions. The Premier Inn owner is set to reveal the current state of its trading activities in an update scheduled for Wednesday.
Over the past year, shares in the FTSE 100 group have faced downward pressure due to constraints on consumer spending, affecting hotel visits and dining out. In its previous update, Whitbread reported a 1% increase in total group sales to £739 million for the three months up to May 30. However, sales were down 1% year-on-year in the first seven weeks of the second quarter. Weak weather conditions further impacted demand during the June to August period.
Despite these challenges, there are signs of recovery as accommodation demand has started to align with previous year levels. Analysts predict that revenues per available room may have improved from a 2% decline in the first quarter to just a 0.4% drop in the latest quarter. However, concerns loom as industry data suggests subdued consumer spending patterns, indicating a potentially slow October ahead.
Recent data from sector research by CGA and RSM reveal modest year-on-year sales growth in the hospitality sector during the summer months. Although sales saw an increase in July and August for venues like pubs and restaurants, the growth rate fell below inflation levels, reflecting weaker consumer activity.
In response to weak performances of some brands, Whitbread announced a restructuring of its food and beverage division earlier this year. The company plans to reduce more than 200 branded restaurants and expand its hotel rooms, which will result in 1,500 job cuts. A strategic move aimed at cost reduction and a refocused business approach centred on hotels with integrated restaurants.
Susannah Streeter, head of money and markets at Hargreaves Lansdown, noted the ongoing restructuring drive and emphasised the importance of continued progress. With signs of recovery towards the end of the quarter, investors remain cautiously optimistic about the company’s future performance.
As Whitbread prepares to update the market, stakeholders will be keen to gain insights into the business’s trajectory amidst market challenges and ongoing restructuring efforts.
