Residents in states affected by Hurricane Helene who previously had coverage through the federal flood insurance program but allowed it to lapse before the storm hit may now have the opportunity to renew their policies and still be covered for the impact.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that certain policyholders in seven states impacted by Hurricane Helene, whose insurance had expired, now have an extended period to renew their coverage. Typically, policyholders under the FEMA-run National Flood Insurance Program have a 30-day grace period after their policies expire to renew and maintain coverage for any incidents during that grace period. This grace period has now been extended until Nov. 26.
For instance, if someone’s policy ended on Aug. 28, they would have originally had until Sept. 26 to renew it without facing a coverage lapse. However, with the extension, they now have until Nov. 26 to renew. Policyholders are advised to contact their insurance company to determine if this extension applies to them.
Jeff Jackson, the interim senior executive of the program, stated, “By extending the grace period for renewing policies, we are giving our policyholders some breathing room and demonstrating that the National Flood Insurance Program stands with them at a time of tremendous heartache and difficulty.”
Hurricane Helene, a Category 4 storm, made landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast on Sept. 26 before progressing northward, causing extensive flooding across multiple states. Since most private insurers do not offer flood insurance, and standard homeowner’s insurance policies typically do not cover flood damage, the National Flood Insurance Program is a vital source of coverage for residential properties. However, this extended grace period only benefits those who have flood insurance in place. Experts estimate that only around 1% of homeowners in the worst-hit inland areas had flood insurance.
The National Flood Insurance Program was established by Congress over 50 years ago when many private insurers ceased offering policies in high-risk regions. This program plays a crucial role in providing flood insurance coverage for homes in vulnerable areas. Residents affected by lapses in their flood insurance coverage in the wake of Hurricane Helene are encouraged to take advantage of this extended renewal window to secure protection against future disasters.
