**Israel’s Deadliest Strike in Central Beirut Leaves Lebanese Stunned**
Lebanese rescue workers are currently sifting through the debris of a collapsed building in central Beirut following two Israeli strikes that struck the Lebanese capital. These strikes have resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 22 people, with dozens more wounded.
The air raid marks the deadliest attack on central Beirut in over a year of conflict and has targeted two residential buildings in neighbourhoods that have become a refuge for those fleeing Israeli bombardment in other parts of the country. Reports suggest that the strikes were intended to target Wafiq Safa, a top security official with Hezbollah, although he was not present in either building at the time of the attack.
Israel has been escalating its offensive against Hezbollah with intense airstrikes across Lebanon and a ground invasion at the border. This recent violence comes amidst a period of heightened tension and exchanges of fire between the two adversaries. In addition to the strikes in Beirut, Israeli forces also fired on United Nations peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, injuring two peacekeepers from Indonesia.
Hezbollah has responded by expanding its rocket attacks further into Israel, with the aim of pushing back Israeli forces from the border to allow displaced Lebanese citizens to return home. The conflict has resulted in a significant loss of life on both sides, with over 2,100 Lebanese casualties, including fighters, civilians, and medical personnel, over the past year. In return, Hezbollah attacks have claimed the lives of 29 civilians and 39 Israeli soldiers.
As the situation continues to escalate, there are concerns that the conflict may worsen, with Israel vowing to deal a severe blow to Hezbollah. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has issued warnings to Lebanon of similar destruction faced by Gaza unless action is taken against Hezbollah. The United States has voiced support for Israel’s campaign, citing legitimate security concerns.
The United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, UNIFIL, has also come under attack from Israeli forces, prompting a rearrangement of personnel and a temporary relocation of peacekeepers in frontline positions. The mission, established to oversee the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon, has been caught in the crossfire amid escalating hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.
The cycle of violence shows no signs of abating as both sides continue to escalate their military actions. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, urging for a diplomatic solution to prevent further loss of life and destruction in the region.
