A former member of the rock band Mr. Bungle has been found guilty of the murder of his girlfriend. The Independent reported that Theobald “Theo” Lengyel, 55, a founding member of the experimental rock band, was convicted of first-degree murder in the killing of his girlfriend, Alice “Alyx” Kamakaokalani Herrmann. The tragic incident occurred on the night of December 4, 2023, inside Herrmann’s Capitola home in California. The jury in Santa Cruz deliberated for a day before reaching their verdict.
Lengyel now awaits sentencing in November and faces the possibility of life imprisonment for his heinous crime. The arrest of Lengyel came in January after investigators located Herrmann’s remains in a wooded area of Tilden Regional Park in Berkeley. Herrmann had been reported missing in the prior month, after she failed to attend a family gathering in Hawaii. During Lengyel’s murder trial, prosecutors revealed a disturbing audio file captured on Herrmann’s phone as she pleaded for her life while being strangled to death.
The audio recording depicted a verbal altercation between Lengyel and Herrmann escalating into a physical confrontation, with Herrmann audibly gasping for air and begging for mercy. The chilling content of the audio was discovered by investigators on September 22, 2024, shedding light on the harrowing final moments of Herrmann’s life. Lengyel, who had played saxophone, clarinet, and keyboards for Mr. Bungle, left the band in 1996 and did not partake in their subsequent reunion tours starting from 2020. Mr. Bungle, formed in Northern California in 1985, blended various musical genres and gained prominence during the alternative rock scene of the 1990s.
The band’s experimentation with funk, heavy metal, electronic, jazz, and other styles resonated with audiences and left a lasting impact on the music industry. Lengyel’s departure from Mr. Bungle was reportedly on strained terms, as noted in a 2005 Q&A with Trevor Dunn, the band’s bassist. As the trial concluded with a conviction for first-degree murder, the music community and fans of Mr. Bungle are left to grapple with the tragic outcome of a once-promising career marred by a gruesome act of violence.
