Lauren Boebert’s son, Tyler Boebert, has managed to avoid jail time after pleading guilty to charges related to a series of car thefts. The 19-year-old appeared at Garfield County Court and entered the plea, following his arrest in February earlier this year. The court session was attended by Tyler’s family, including his mother, who is a Republican congresswoman representing Colorado.
Tyler Boebert was taken into custody by Rifle police for allegedly being involved in vehicle trespass and property theft incidents. Initially facing 22 charges, including several felony counts for identity theft and conspiracy, he decided to plead guilty to one count of attempted identity theft, a class five felony, as part of a plea agreement. The other charges were dismissed. Without the guilty plea, Tyler could have faced a potential sentence of one to three years in prison and a fine of up to $100,000.
As part of the agreement, Tyler Boebert will be on a two-year deferred judgment, which means he can avoid a felony conviction if he successfully completes his probation. The judge stressed the importance of completing probation to avoid long-term consequences, including restrictions on owning firearms and employment challenges due to a felony record.
District Attorney Virginia Sorrell acknowledged that Tyler Boebert had no prior criminal record upon entering the justice system, highlighting the seriousness of the case as a first encounter. She mentioned that the disposition provides Tyler an opportunity to succeed at probation and prevent a felony conviction at a young age.
Additionally, Tyler Boebert is required to fulfil 80 hours of community service during his first year of probation. The judge also reminded him of the impact his actions had on the victims involved in the case. Lauren Boebert released a statement expressing her sadness at her son’s public challenges and difficulties, stating that it hurts to see him struggling, despite being provided with multiple chances to improve his life.
Previously, Tyler Boebert made headlines when it was announced that Ms. Boebert would become a grandmother at the age of 36, as Tyler was becoming a father. The Independent reached out to the congresswoman’s office for comment, but there has been no response at the time of reporting.
