The Independent reported that Trump confidently declared at the Detroit Economic Club luncheon that he received the honour from the county’s Republican Party in 2013. However, the newspaper clipping he presented as evidence turned out to be inaccurate.
Trump has long insisted that he was awarded the title of ‘Man of the Year’ by Michigan in 2013, despite multiple fact-checks from news outlets such as the New York Times confirming that no such award exists. Dismissing these reports as “fake news” and “quite insulting,” the former president brandished a 2023 article from the Oakland Press that erroneously stated he had been named ‘Man of the Year’ at the Oakland County Republican Party Lincoln Day dinner.
Following Trump’s presentation of the article, the Oakland Press issued a correction, clarifying that he was not honoured as ‘Man of the Year’ in 2013. Instead, the correction noted that Trump had been recognised as the ‘Man of the Decade’ at the event, as reported in the 2023 story. This correction marked the end of an eight-year saga during which Trump repeatedly boasted about winning the Michigan ‘Man of the Year’ title on numerous occasions.
Despite being awarded the ‘Man of the Decade’ by the Oakland County Republican Party in 2023, it took several years for Trump’s claim of winning ‘Man of the Year’ to be debunked. The Independent sought a comment from the Trump campaign regarding this matter.
