Novak Djokovic has lauded his long-time tennis rival Rafael Nadal for his outstanding contribution to the sport, referring to it as Nadal’s “greatest achievement”. The two legends of the game, Djokovic and Nadal, have faced each other a record 60 times and together accumulated 46 Grand Slam titles, setting a remarkable standard in the tennis world.
In an emotional tribute following Nadal’s announcement of his retirement from professional tennis after a remarkable career spanning 23 years, Djokovic expressed his deep respect and admiration for the Spanish player. Despite Serbia not qualifying for the Davis Cup finals in Malaga, Spain, where Nadal is set to bid farewell to the sport, Djokovic pledged to be present to honour his great rival.
Taking to social media, Djokovic, 37, shared, “One post is not enough to express the respect I have for you and what you have done for our sport. You have inspired millions of children to start playing tennis, and I think that’s probably the greatest achievement anyone can wish for. Your tenacity, dedication, fighting spirit is going to be taught for decades.”
The transition in the Grand Slam race between Djokovic and Nadal was noted in 2023, when Djokovic surpassed Nadal’s record with his 24th title. Acknowledging Nadal’s impact on his career, Djokovic thanked him for continually pushing him to excel. Their final encounter at the Paris Olympics in August marked Djokovic’s 31st victory over Nadal, with the Spaniard securing 29 wins in their head-to-head battles.

With Nadal leading their head-to-head record 24-16, Federer recalled their nine Grand Slam final encounters, with Nadal claiming victory in six of them.
