A Scottish drug kingpin, Martin Murphy, 45, has been sentenced to four years and four months in prison at the High Court in Edinburgh. The sentencing came after Murphy fled police during a cocaine sting operation at Glasgow Fort. In April 2020, Murphy was involved in a cocaine handover at the shopping centre in Glasgow’s East End. Surveillance officers observed Murphy receiving a package believed to be worth £90,000 from another individual in a supermarket car park. When police attempted to arrest him, Murphy made a daring escape in his Range Rover, driving at high speed on the wrong side of the road. During the police chase on the M8 motorway, Murphy threw the package out of his car window.
Police uncovered incriminating evidence against Murphy through the Encrochat platform, which is popular among serious criminals. Messages and images on Murphy’s phones revealed the extent of his drug trafficking activities, leading to his arrest. A search of his house yielded significant amounts of cash, totaling £153,650, along with 7,680 euros and a small quantity of cocaine. Murphy used multiple Encrochat handles to discuss drug transportation, delivery, and distribution with his associates. The court heard that Murphy was engaged in drug deals amounting to hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Deputy Procurator Fiscal Sineidin Corrins praised the successful prosecution, emphasizing the impact of removing drugs from the streets and disrupting local drug supply networks. The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service worked closely with the police to investigate and dismantle Murphy’s drug trafficking network. Drug trafficking is a destructive crime that harms individuals and communities, and authorities are committed to combating it through collaborative efforts.
Following his conviction, Murphy will face confiscation proceedings under Proceeds of Crime legislation to recover illegally obtained funds.
