The United States has announced an expansion of sanctions on Iran in response to its ballistic attack on Israel on October 1. The attack saw approximately 180 missiles fired into Israel, prompting the U.S. to take action against Iran’s energy sector.
These new sanctions target Iran’s “ghost fleet” of ships and associated firms spread across various jurisdictions, including the United Arab Emirates, Liberia, and Hong Kong. These entities are believed to be involved in transporting Iranian oil for sale to buyers in Asia. Additionally, a network of companies based in Suriname, India, Malaysia, and Hong Kong has been designated by the U.S. State Department for facilitating the sale and transport of petroleum and petroleum products from Iran.
While current U.S. legislation allows for sanctions on Iran’s energy sector and foreign entities involved in Iranian oil trade, the implementation of energy sanctions is a sensitive matter. Disrupting the oil supply could potentially impact global commodity prices needed by the U.S. and its allies.
Jake Sullivan, the U.S. national security adviser, stated that these sanctions aim to deprive Iran of financial resources used to support its missile programs and terrorist groups that pose a threat to the U.S. and its allies. The penalties are designed to restrict these entities from using the U.S. financial system and prohibit American citizens from engaging in transactions with them.
Tensions between Israel and Iran have been simmering for years, with sporadic confrontations.
