The UK government has strongly criticised the Israeli military for its “appalling” airstrikes on the United Nations peacekeeping headquarters in Lebanon, according to a report by The Independent. The attacks, which occurred twice within a span of 48 hours, have caused outrage among Israel’s allies.
As Israel intensifies its offensive against Hezbollah, more than 1.2 million people have been displaced, leading to significant humanitarian concerns. The recent airstrikes in Beirut, described as the deadliest so far, resulted in at least 22 fatalities and 139 injuries in densely populated areas where many have been forced to flee their homes.
Witnesses reported continuous explosions in an eight-storey building in Ras al-Nabaa after the first strike, while the second strike in Burj Abi Haidar caused an entire building to collapse in flames. Additionally, eight more individuals were killed in airstrikes across villages in southern and eastern Lebanon on Friday, as confirmed by the Lebanese health ministry.
Following the attacks, France, Italy, Ireland, and Spain have all condemned Israel’s actions, labelling them as a serious violation of international law. The Israeli military, on the other hand, expressed “deep concern” and claimed that their operations were targeting Hezbollah, with the intention of ensuring the safety of their own citizens.
In response to the escalating conflict, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) accused Israel of deliberately firing at their base, resulting in injuries to peacekeepers. The UK government, through a Downing Street spokesperson, emphasised the importance of protecting peacekeepers and civilians, calling for an immediate ceasefire to prevent further suffering.
The US also weighed in on the situation, with Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin urging Israel to shift from military operations to diplomatic solutions. The ongoing conflict has raised fears of a wider war in the Middle East, prompting nine southern European countries to express extreme concern over Israel’s military actions in Lebanon.
In the midst of the chaos, Lebanon’s army reported casualties after Israeli forces attacked one of its military posts in the south. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, advocating for the safety of civilians and the restoration of peace in the region.
