A major search operation is currently underway on the River Thames after a rowing boat carrying six people capsized, leaving one man in his sixties feared to be missing. The incident took place at Sunbury-on-Thames, with Surrey Police expressing concerns that the man may still be in the water.
The small vessel capsized shortly before 8.50am on Friday morning, leading to the rescue of five individuals who had fallen into the river. Three of those rescued were subsequently taken to hospital for further checks following the ordeal.
Authorities, including the police, paramedics, and fire and rescue personnel, responded swiftly to the scene at Sunbury Lock, near Wheatleys Eyot island. HM Coastguard and a local RNLI service were also called in to assist with the search and rescue mission.
A woman who was in the vicinity reported seeing a red rescue boat and a helicopter actively involved in the search efforts. She described witnessing the emergency teams using walkie talkies as they scoured the water for any signs of the missing man.
Chief Inspector Andy Jenkins from north Surrey issued a statement expressing the distress felt by everyone involved in the incident. He reassured the public that there were no suspicions of foul play or third-party involvement in the boat capsizing.
