A Wishaw dad has been given hope of relief from years of knee pain after participating in an international transplant surgery trial. Andrew Pollock, 29, has undergone a groundbreaking surgery to receive a replacement meniscus, a crucial knee cartilage pad that acts as a shock absorber. This procedure marks a significant milestone as Andrew becomes the first patient in Lanarkshire to undergo this life-changing surgery.
The surgery was conducted by three consultant specialist knee surgeons at University Hospital Hairmyres in East Kilbride – Mr. Rahul Bhattacharyya and Mr. Oliver Bailey from NHS Lanarkshire, and Mr. Simon Spencer from NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde. Their expertise and dedication have been instrumental in providing Andrew with this innovative treatment. Andrew’s journey began about eight years ago when he experienced a knee injury while at work. A tear in his meniscus, likely caused by playing football, led to half of it being surgically removed. Upon learning about the transplant surgery trial, Andrew made the decision to participate in the hope of finding a lasting solution to his knee issues.
The trial, known as Meteor2 (Meniscal Transplant Surgery or Optimised Rehabilitation), is a collaborative effort coordinated by Warwick University and involves multiple sites across the UK and internationally. This trial aims to assess the effectiveness of meniscal transplants in delaying arthritis progression in patients like Andrew, who are too young for a knee replacement.
Since undergoing the meniscal allograft transplant nearly five months ago, Andrew has been steadily progressing in his recovery. The surgery has alleviated much of his previous knee pain, restored his range of motion, and improved his overall quality of life. The success of Andrew’s surgery is a testament to the collaborative efforts of the medical team at University Hospital Hairmyres.
