British Airways scraps long-haul flights amid Rolls Royce engines parts shortage

British Airways has been forced to cancel a number of long-haul flights due to a shortage of engine parts, affecting thousands of passengers’ travel plans. The airline had to cancel flights operated by Boeing 787 Dreamliner jets, leading to disruptions in services to destinations such as Malaysia, Qatar, and New York. The grounding of planes was a result of wear and tear on the Trent 1000 engines powering British Airways’ fleet of Dreamliners.

As a consequence of supply chain issues, engine manufacturers Rolls-Royce have been unable to provide an adequate number of spare parts to sustain the operation of the affected aircraft. The shortage of replacement engine parts has resulted in the grounding of at least five out of British Airways’ 787 aircraft, which accounts for around 15% of the airline’s fleet.

The recent cancellations follow previous disruptions to the 787 schedule and flight delays due to air-traffic control issues. British Airways has acknowledged that the ongoing engine parts shortages are not expected to be resolved swiftly. The airline assured customers that most affected travellers would be offered an alternative flight on the same day with British Airways or one of its partner airlines.

A British Airways spokesperson expressed disappointment at the need to adjust their schedule due to delays in engine and parts deliveries from Rolls-Royce. The spokesperson emphasised the importance of providing certainty to customers regarding their travel plans and mentioned that the airline is working closely with Rolls-Royce to address the impact on schedules and customers. The manufacturer, Rolls-Royce, also highlighted that the shortage of spares is an industry-wide issue affecting the aerospace sector.

Despite the challenges posed by the ongoing engine parts shortage, British Airways and Rolls-Royce are committed to mitigating the impact on passengers and resolving the supply chain constraints to resume normal operations. The airline’s priority remains ensuring a prompt and reliable solution to the issue to minimise further disruptions to travel plans in the future.
