DP World, the parent company of P&O Ferries, is set to attend the Government’s international investment summit on Monday, despite recent calls to boycott its subsidiary. The decision comes after reports suggested that a disagreement over the boycott had jeopardised a potential £1 billion investment in the UK.
Initially, there were concerns that Dubai-based DP World had withdrawn from the summit and was reconsidering its plans to make a significant investment in the UK following Transport Secretary Louise Haigh’s strong criticism of P&O. However, the Department of Business and Trade confirmed that DP World will indeed participate in the summit, although the company has yet to provide a comment on the matter.
Labour MP Sir Keir Starmer clarified that Ms Haigh’s call for a boycott of P&O Ferries did not reflect the government’s position. Meanwhile, Labour MP Liam Byrne emphasised the importance of regulating companies like P&O to prevent mistreatment of workers, citing the introduction of new legislation by Ms Haigh and Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner.
The controversy surrounding P&O Ferries erupted earlier when the company dismissed 800 British employees and replaced them with cheaper overseas workers, claiming financial necessity. The incident triggered bipartisan criticism and led to calls for stricter regulations to prevent such actions in the future.
Despite the ongoing debate, the upcoming investment summit is expected to showcase the UK as an attractive destination for businesses, highlighting firms that have already invested billions in the country. The government aims to send a clear message that unethical practices, such as those attributed to P&O in the past, will not be tolerated in the UK’s business landscape.
Looking ahead, the involvement of DP World in the summit indicates a commitment to responsible business practices and aligning with the government’s vision for a fair and ethical corporate environment. The event will provide an opportunity for the government to reaffirm its stance on upholding worker rights and holding companies accountable for their conduct.
