Severe drought in Zambia has led to the worst electricity blackouts the country has experienced, caused by a lack of water in the critical Kariba dam, the world’s largest man-made lake. The drought has left the dam with insufficient water to operate its hydroelectric turbines, plunging the country into a deep energy crisis.
The Kariba dam, located 200 kilometers south of Lusaka on the Zambia-Zimbabwe border, was constructed in the 1950s to provide hydroelectric power by harnessing the Zambezi River.
