Hindus in Bangladesh celebrated their largest festival, Durga Puja, under tight security measures due to fears and concerns following recent attacks targeting minority groups.
The weeklong festival, which culminates in the immersion of the Hindu Goddess, was met with unease within the Hindu community in the Muslim-majority country. Reports of vandalism, violence, and intimidation in various parts of Bangladesh cast a shadow over the festivities. Hindus account for about 8% of the population, with over 13 million people practicing the religion.
The current interim leader, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has been under scrutiny for his administration’s ability to protect minorities since taking over in August. The safety of the Durga Puja festival was viewed as a critical test for his government in light of recent attacks on minority groups, particularly Hindus.
Despite assurances from government officials regarding security measures, concerns persisted among the Hindu community. Reports from the Bangladesh Hindu, Buddhist, Christian Unity Council highlighted over 2,000 incidents of communal violence targeting minorities, resulting in fatalities, rapes, and property damage.
Incidents of vandalism continued as the Hindu community prepared for the festival, with reports emerging of attacks on temples and idols. Although authorities promised heightened security, tensions remained high, with recent events including arrests of individuals for provocative activities during the festival.
Hindus expressed a desire for peaceful coexistence with other religious communities in Bangladesh. The importance of maintaining harmony and ensuring the freedom to practice one’s religion without fear or discrimination was emphasized by community members.
Government officials reiterated their commitment to providing security throughout the festival period. Special security measures involving not only the police but also the military, navy, and air force were put in place to preserve law and order.
Despite the challenges and anxieties surrounding this year’s Durga Puja festival, many Hindus remained hopeful for a future where diverse communities could come together in celebration without fear or intimidation. The desire for a harmonious and inclusive society in Bangladesh was reiterated by members of the Hindu community.
