Hurricane Milton has brought an unexpected twist to the lives of a Florida couple, Laura and Basil Yorio, who unearthed a long-lost wedding ring in the aftermath of the storm. The couple, residing in Palm Bay, Florida, had to evacuate their home as Hurricane Milton, a category 3 storm with 120 mph winds, hit on Wednesday evening, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Upon returning home the next day, Laura spotted something shining in their backyard. To her surprise, it turned out to be her husband’s wedding band that had been missing for almost a decade.
Reflecting on the discovery, Laura shared with Fox 35 Orlando that she initially mistook the gleaming object for a key ring before realizing it was her husband’s lost wedding ring. Recalling the past, Laura mentioned that the ring had disappeared around nine years ago during a construction project. Despite numerous searches of their yard over the years, including hiring a weekly landscaper, the ring remained elusive until Hurricane Milton appeared to reveal it from the ground.
Amidst the chaos caused by Hurricane Milton, which made landfall near Sarasota County’s Siesta Key, unleashing tornadoes, colossal waves, intense winds, heavy rain, and destructive storm surges, the Yorios found a glimmer of joy in their unexpected discovery. The hurricane led to tragic consequences, claiming the lives of at least 17 individuals and leaving over 1.6 million homes in Florida without power.
As the state grapples with the aftermath of the storm, with significant damage in the west-central region, efforts are underway to restore power and assess the full extent of the destruction. Governor Ron DeSantis reported that more than 50,000 linemen have been mobilised to aid in the restoration efforts. However, amidst the devastation, a phosphate mine operator admitted to inadvertently discharging thousands of gallons of pollution into Tampa Bay as a result of overflowing drains during the hurricane.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by many in the wake of Hurricane Milton, Laura expressed mixed emotions, stating, “We’re very mindful that a lot of people are going through terrible things, and I feel almost a little guilty feeling happy about all of this, but it was something good.” For the Yorios, the recovery of the long-lost wedding ring served as a bright spot in the midst of the storm’s aftermath, offering a silver lining of hope and joy after a tumultuous period.
