Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai has ventured into the world of film production with her debut documentary, ‘The Last Of The Sea Women’, which highlights the remarkable resilience of a group of Korean fisherwomen. These women, known as the haenyeo divers, hail from South Korea’s Jeju Island and are predominantly in their 60s or older. Despite facing threats to their marine habitats, they fearlessly plunge into the ocean depths without the aid of oxygen to gather sustenance.
Yousafzai, who founded Extracurricular Productions, expressed her admiration for the haenyeo divers, stating that their ability to push beyond perceived limitations is truly inspirational, especially in a world where women are often boxed in by societal expectations. She emphasised the importance of sharing such stories that showcase women’s capabilities and resilience, particularly for those advocating for gender equality and empowerment.
Director Sue Kim, a Korean-American, shared her childhood fascination with the haenyeo divers, recalling how their strength and camaraderie left a lasting impression on her. The documentary delves into the challenges faced by these women, both underwater and in their changing environment. Kim voiced concerns over the waning interest among younger women to carry on the haenyeo tradition, as well as environmental threats impacting their way of life.
