Israeli Military Issues Renewed Evacuation Orders for Northern Gaza
The Israeli military has once again instructed Palestinians in northern Gaza to vacate their homes and shelters as part of an ongoing offensive against militants. Avichay Adraee, a military spokesperson, urged residents to leave areas in Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood and surrounding regions such as Jabaliya, an urban refugee camp that has been a focal point for Israeli operations. Adraee further specified that people should relocate south to Muwasi, a designated humanitarian zone in southern Gaza. The past week has seen intense fighting in and around Jabaliya, with Israeli airstrikes and artillery barrages causing residents to be effectively trapped in their residences and shelters. Additionally, the military has directed the evacuation of patients and medical staff from three main hospitals in northern Gaza.
In the midst of these developments, Lebanon reported that 60 individuals were killed and 168 wounded within the last 24 hours, bringing the total casualties in the ongoing conflict between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah over the past year to 2,229 dead and 10,380 injured. Israel’s operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon have escalated, marked by extensive airstrikes and a ground invasion at the border, following a year of hostilities. Concurrently, Israel is engaged in a conflict with Hamas in Gaza, resulting in over 42,000 Palestinian casualties, with local health authorities noting that more than half of the fatalities comprise women and children. The enduring warfare has caused widespread destruction in Gaza, displacing approximately 90% of its 2.3 million inhabitants, many of whom have been uprooted multiple times.
The genesis of the current escalation traces back to a year ago when Hamas-led militants breached Israel’s security fence, launching deadly assaults on army bases and agricultural settlements that claimed 1,200 lives, predominantly civilians, and led to the abduction of 250 individuals. Presently, around 100 captives remain in Gaza, a third of whom are feared to have perished, underscoring the protracted humanitarian crisis gripping the region.
