A suspected murder victim in Scotland was identified as a known sex offender who had recently avoided a prison sentence for sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl. Martin Forgie, aged 36, had admitted to sexual assault and assault to injury back in March but was not imprisoned; instead, he received a community payback order. The discovery of Forgie’s body in a flat in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, has prompted a police investigation, with a 44-year-old man being charged in connection to his death.
Forgie, who had been listed on the sex offenders register, had caused outrage for sexually assaulting a young girl at a shopping centre. During his trial at Aberdeen Sheriff Court, he confessed to sexually assaulting the girl, who was filming a TikTok video with her friend. The incident took place in Aberdeen’s St Nicholas Centre in October the previous year, where Forgie touched the girl inappropriately before touching her buttocks. Following the assault, the girl and her friend immediately notified the police.
At the trial, Fiscal depute Andrew McMann detailed how the girls approached Forgie initially, thinking he was asleep but later realizing he was intoxicated. After the assault, another man familiar with Forgie’s behaviour intervened, leading to a physical altercation where Forgie started kicking him. Security staff intervened and detained Forgie until the arrival of the police. Despite the severity of the offences, Forgie was not sentenced to prison. The sheriff emphasized that addressing Forgie’s alcohol problem was crucial and imposed a community payback order, supervision, and participation in a domestic abuse programme for three years. Additionally, Forgie was placed on the sex offenders register for three years.
The circumstances surrounding Forgie’s recent demise, shortly after avoiding jail time, have raised questions and concerns. The investigation into his death and the subsequent legal proceedings will shed light on the events leading up to this tragic outcome.
