A Scottish pensioner, Maureen Gunn, has come forward to express her deep regret after swindling over £14,000 from her own mother in a honeytrap trick. Gunn, aged 66, admitted to transferring money from her mother’s account to her own and making unauthorized bank withdrawals to send money to an online acquaintance she believed to be a naval captain named Joshua Jacobs stationed in Syria. The Edinburgh resident confessed that she now questions herself daily, pondering, ‘why did I do it?’
Gunn revealed that she felt manipulated by the internet fraudster and upon being confronted at her home, she expressed her remorse for falling victim to the scam. It was later discovered that the pictures of the supposed naval captain were actually of a gay Danish sea captain named Thomas Lindegaard Madsen. Gunn lamented the loss of her pension, her car, and being shunned by her family due to her deceitful actions, acknowledging the rift she caused among her loved ones.
The deception began with Gunn being approached online by the fraudster, who gradually coerced her into sending money under false pretenses. She expressed sorrow at the realization that she had been deceived and urged others to be cautious of similar scams. Despite warnings from her brother, a former Royal Navy member, Gunn continued sending money to the imposter, leading to her arrest in January 2024 after discrepancies in her mother’s account were flagged by the bank.
Appearing in court, Gunn pleaded guilty to embezzling the substantial sum over a period from September 2020 to July 2021, while she was acting as her mother’s primary caregiver. Sheriff John Cook condemned Gunn’s breach of trust towards her mother but decided against an immediate custodial sentence due to her age and willingness to take responsibility for her actions. Instead, she was placed on a three-year supervision order, required to perform 140 hours of community service, and instructed to pay back the embezzled amount in monthly instalments.
