Tribal clashes in Pakistan’s northwest have resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 11 people, with a further eight individuals, including women and children, sustaining injuries, as reported by a local official. The violence erupted in Kurram district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, following a shooting incident between rival tribes that left two individuals critically wounded. The exact cause of the initial shooting remains unclear. Subsequently, vehicles in various parts of the district were targeted, leading to additional casualties, according to senior official Javedullah Khan.
Efforts are underway to secure travel routes and restore peace in the region, with the injured parties receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital. Pir Haider Ali Shah, a former parliamentarian and tribal council member, disclosed that elders had descended upon Kurram to facilitate peace negotiations between the warring factions. Expressing deep concern over the recent spate of violence, Shah emphasised that such incidents undermine the ongoing efforts towards achieving lasting harmony.
Notably, last month saw a separate conflict unfold in the southwest, where a separatist group claimed responsibility for an attack resulting in 21 fatalities. The Baloch Liberation Army asserted that its operatives targeted a coal mine in Duki district using heavy weaponry, including rocket launchers and grenades, late on Thursday evening. The group alleged that Pakistani security personnel had infiltrated the mine disguised as workers. Furthermore, the Baloch Liberation Army warned of further assaults unless military forces withdrew from the province.
Balochistan, the province where the separatist group operates, is home to various factions advocating for independence from the central government, citing exploitation of the region’s abundant oil and mineral resources to the detriment of local inhabitants. The escalating violence underscores the complex socio-political landscape within different regions of Pakistan, with historical tensions often flaring up and resulting in tragic consequences for innocent civilians caught in the crossfire.
