Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz embarked on a pheasant hunting excursion during the opening day of Minnesota’s season, showcasing his rural upbringing and passion for outdoor activities. Despite the efforts put in by Walz and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan near Sleepy Eye, approximately 90 miles southwest of Minneapolis, no pheasants were captured. However, other members of their group managed to shoot down six birds on a picturesque autumn day, according to reports from the governor’s office.
During the hunting expedition, a humbled Walz was overheard acknowledging the challenge posed by the elusive birds as they searched the tall grass for a downed pheasant. The trip was part of an initiative to resonate with male voters, with the Harris-Walz campaign launching the Hunters and Anglers for Harris-Walz programme aimed at engaging sports enthusiasts and rural voters nationwide.
In response, the opposing Trump campaign took a jibe at Walz, accusing him of resorting to desperate measures to appeal to male voters. The campaign’s statement included misleading remarks about the outing, claiming that no guns were present during the hunt and insinuating implications for a future under a Harris-Walz administration. Although a brief video clip shared by the Trump campaign did not show firearms, it was filmed before the hunting party had adorned their safety gear and commenced their pursuit after a thorough safety briefing.
Walz, who previously held a high rating from the National Rifle Association during his tenure in Congress, underwent a shift in his stance on gun-related matters following a string of school-related shootings. As governor, he endorsed legislation in 2023 that expanded background checks for gun transfers and introduced a “red flag law” empowering courts to temporarily confiscate firearms from individuals deemed to pose a risk of harm. His spouse, Gwen, has actively championed firearm safety legislation.
The Minnesota Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener, an annual event since 2011, reflects the state’s tradition of celebrating outdoor activities. The event rotates through different host communities in the pheasant-rich regions of southern and western Minnesota. Walz’s hunting expedition followed his attendance at a football match in Mankato, where he once served as an assistant coach, illustrating his multifaceted persona blending politics and sports.
