A Russian military embarrassment shook the skies near Kostyantynivka in eastern Ukraine recently as Moscow’s own forces downed one of their most advanced weapons, the S-70 Okhotnik-B stealth drone. The incident, captured in videos on 5th October, saw a Russian Su-57 fighter jet shooting down the malfunctioning drone to prevent it from falling into Ukrainian hands. This strategic move, however, led to the Ukrainian forces gaining access to crucial components of the cutting-edge drone, providing them with a rare opportunity to analyse Russia’s latest drone technology.
The S-70 Okhotnik-B, also known as the “Hunter”, is a state-of-the-art unmanned aerial vehicle designed to accompany fighter jets and operate stealthily. Weighing over 20 tonnes with a range of 6,000km, it can carry up to 2.8 tonnes of weaponry while remaining undetected by radar systems. The drone, developed since 2011, was intended to enhance Russia’s aerial capabilities without risking human lives. Despite its innovative design, flaws like visible rivets and engine nozzles made it vulnerable to radar detection.
Although Russia had not previously deployed the Okhotnik drone in the conflict with Ukraine, the recent incident may have been its first Ukrainian mission. The loss of the drone represents a setback for Russia’s drone development programme and a potential intelligence gain for Ukraine and NATO. Experts speculate that analysing the wreckage could reveal critical information about the drone’s capabilities and help in countering Russia’s aerial strategies in current and future conflicts.
