A prominent lawyer, Aamer Anwar, has accused Nigel Farage of establishing a far-right party based on what he describes as “disinformation and racism.” Anwar’s criticism comes after Farage, the leader of the Reform Party, mentioned the possibility of initiating a private prosecution against individuals involved in a confrontation with police at Manchester Airport. The incident, captured on video, showed a Greater Manchester Police officer kicking and stamping on a man’s head while he was being restrained. Subsequent footage depicted a violent altercation between the men and police officers.
Anwar, representing the affected family, denounced Farage, stating, “Farage’s Reform is often accused of having a precarious grip on reality and this latest diatribe with dog-whistle claims of a two-tier justice system are no more than grandstanding and dangerous misinformation.” He further criticised Farage for leading campaigns based on misinformation, pointing out instances where Farage spread false claims which incited violence and fear towards certain communities.
The lawyer highlighted Farage’s accusations of a two-tier policing system by the Greater Manchester Police and the CPS English prosecution service following the Manchester Airport incident. Anwar emphasised that in a civilised society, due process should be respected, urging Farage to comprehend the legal procedures rather than resorting to mob-driven actions. Additionally, Anwar underscored the need for a thorough examination of all evidence relating to the incident, including the excessive use of force by law enforcement.
Anwar questioned Farage’s motives and his party’s stance on issues such as homophobia, Islamophobia, and racism. He pointed out the selective outrage displayed by Farage and the Reform party, especially in the face of violent acts committed by far-right extremists. Anwar suggested that Farage’s actions are fuelling a far-right narrative, which is dangerous and divisive.
As disagreements between Anwar and Farage escalate, the Home Office has reiterated its support for independent investigations by law enforcement agencies. Anwar concluded by highlighting the importance of upholding principles of justice, fairness, and the rule of law in addressing such incidents, rather than resorting to inflammatory rhetoric and actions.
