An Australian police sergeant is likely to be charged over a Nazi salute, as reported by The Independent. The 65-year-old sergeant reportedly performed the outlawed Nazi salute and praised Adolf Hitler with the words, “Heil Hitler,” in front of academy staff and recruits at the Victoria state police academy in Melbourne.
Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton expressed his disappointment, disgust, and anger at the sergeant’s conduct during a press conference. He emphasised that such behaviour has no place in society, let alone within the police force. Patton offered a profound apology to the Jewish community and the community as a whole, acknowledging the impact of the incident.
The sergeant, who has served for over 40 years, was suspended from duty and interviewed by internal investigators. It is expected that she will be charged by summons, with potential penalties including up to 12 months in prison and a fine of up to 23,000 Australian dollars.
