Aryna Sabalenka secured her third Wuhan Open title, closing the gap on rankings leader Iga Swiatek in an intense battle against home favourite Zheng Qinwen.
Sabalenka, who had previously won the title in 2018 and 2019, continued her unbeaten streak at the tournament, reaffirming her dominance on the court this year. The Belarusian emerged victorious with a 6-3 5-7 6-3 win over Zheng, bringing her within 69 points of Swiatek in the rankings as they gear up for a showdown at the upcoming WTA Finals.
Despite Zheng’s past struggles against Sabalenka, including a defeat in the Australian Open final earlier this year, the Chinese fifth seed put up a formidable fight in this closely contested match. After falling behind a set and a break, Zheng staged a strong comeback to take a 5-3 lead in the second set. Although she couldn’t close it out initially, Zheng managed to break Sabalenka for the third time to level the match.
However, Sabalenka regrouped in the deciding set, taking an early lead and maintaining her composure despite Zheng’s efforts to rally back. Ultimately, the top seed sealed the victory on her third match point, highlighting her unwavering determination and resilience on the court.
