Former First Minister Humza Yousaf opens up on ‘lingering grief’ of baby loss

Former First Minister Humza Yousaf has candidly shared the emotional journey he and his wife have faced dealing with the sorrow of “multiple miscarriages”. The former SNP leader recently celebrated the arrival of their newborn daughter, Liyana, with his wife Nadia El-Nakla. During Baby Loss Awareness Week (BLAW), Yousaf opened up about their experiences of “multiple miscarriages” in a message of solidarity to parents who have endured similar challenges. BLAW, which runs until Tuesday, aims to offer support and understanding to families who have experienced pregnancy or baby loss.

Yousaf reassured his followers that it is perfectly normal to still carry feelings of grief, regardless of when the loss occurred or how long it has been. He emphasised the importance of acknowledging these emotions, stating, “It’s okay not to be okay.” Reflecting on their personal journey, he shared, “Although we’ve been blessed to have children together, that grief of that loss still lingers.” Yousaf encouraged breaking the silence surrounding pregnancy and baby loss, urging for a supportive environment without stigma or taboos.

During his time as First Minister, Yousaf established the baby loss memorial book, allowing families to officially document their loss in the National Records of Scotland. He expressed gratitude to charities, support groups, and healthcare professionals for their dedication to providing assistance to women and families navigating the challenges of baby loss. Yousaf advocated for collective efforts to eliminate the taboo associated with baby loss and ensure that no one suffers in isolation.

As Baby Loss Awareness Week continues, individuals are encouraged to explore the resources and support available through various charities. Yousaf’s heartfelt message serves as a reminder of the significance of compassion, empathy, and understanding in addressing the complexities of pregnancy and baby loss. By fostering open conversations and promoting a supportive environment, Yousaf envisions a future where individuals impacted by baby loss can find solace and solidarity within their communities.
