SpaceX achieved a remarkable engineering feat on Sunday as mechanical arms successfully caught the Starship rocket booster at the landing pad. The colossal Starship rocket, standing at almost 400 feet tall, took off at dawn from the southern tip of Texas, near the Mexican border.
The Starship rocket arced over the Gulf of Mexico, following previous prototypes that ended in destruction. However, this test flight marked a significant milestone as the returning booster was caught by mechanical arms back at the launch pad. Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of SpaceX, increased the challenge and risk by attempting this feat.
The launch tower was equipped with giant metal arms, nicknamed “chopsticks,” which successfully captured the descending 232-foot booster. Musk shared the excitement, confirming, “The tower has caught the rocket!!” SpaceX employees cheered as the booster was gently lowered into the arms of the launch tower.
Witnessing the event, SpaceX’s Dan Huot described it as magical, while SpaceX’s Kate Tice hailed it as a day for the engineering history books. The decision to attempt the landing was made in real-time by the flight director, ensuring both the booster and launch tower were in good condition for the catch.
Following the successful catch, the stainless steel spacecraft continued its journey around the world and aimed for a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean. SpaceX has been recovering first-stage boosters of its Falcon 9 rockets for years, significantly increasing the launch rate and saving costs.
The Starship rocket, with its 33 methane-fuel engines on the booster alone, is intended for ambitious missions to the moon and eventually Mars. NASA has already ordered two Starships for moon missions later this decade. SpaceX’s innovation and progress in rocket technology continue to pave the way for future space exploration endeavours.
