Ukraine’s human rights envoy has called upon international organisations to react to reports of alleged killings of Ukrainian prisoners of war in the Kursk region of Russia. The Ukrainian ombudsman highlighted the claim that several Ukrainian POWs were executed by Russian troops in Kursk, where Kyiv had initiated an incursion back in August.
DeepState, a Ukrainian battlefield analysis site affiliated with Ukraine’s Defense Ministry, disclosed that nine Ukrainian “drone operators and contractors” were shot and killed by Russian troops on October 10 after surrendering. Dmytro Lubinets reached out to the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross, denouncing the incident as “another crime committed by the Russians.”
Following these revelations, Ukrainian Prosecutor-General Andriy Kostin confirmed that a criminal investigation had been launched into the matter. Earlier this month, the Prosecutor-General’s Office of Ukraine reported that Russian forces had killed 16 captured Ukrainian soldiers in the Donetsk region.
On the other hand, there has been no immediate response from Russian authorities regarding these allegations. In a separate development, the Ukrainian air force announced that they successfully intercepted 31 out of 68 drones launched by Russia into various regions including Kyiv, Poltava, Chernihiv, Sumy, and Cherkasy. Additionally, ballistic missiles targeted Odesa and Poltava, while guided air missiles struck Chernihiv and Sumy. Fortunately, local authorities did not report any casualties or damages from these attacks.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine reported that Russia had launched a substantial number of aerial bombs, missiles, and drones against Ukraine over the past week. Zelenskyy called upon Ukraine’s allies for support in providing adequate air defense systems to counter these threats.
In Russia, the Defence Ministry confirmed that 13 Ukrainian drones were successfully brought down in the Belgorod, Kursk, and Bryansk regions bordering Ukraine. Amid escalating tensions and continued military actions, the situation remains critical, with both sides deeply entrenched in the conflict. The international community is closely monitoring the developments as efforts are made to address the humanitarian and security concerns arising from the conflict in the region.
